Evolution of Business Networking

Business networking image

"Networking is dead." This comment was passed by a fellow marketing professional at a recent event I attended (a networking event, ironically), and it got me thinking... in the digital age in which we're living, where we have no need to meet face-to-face to communicate effectively, does business networking still have a place?

In my view, rather than being obsolete, networking has simply evolved. With digital tools and remote working transforming traditional job roles and changing the way we do business, many find themselves craving live interactions.

Digital platforms have expanded our reach, making it easier than ever to connect with people across the globe. However, nothing can fully replace the trust, rapport, and opportunities that in-person interactions provide.

Why Does Business Networking Still Matter?

  1. Building Genuine Relationships – Face-to-face interactions allow for deeper connections that go beyond LinkedIn connections or email exchanges and build resilient business relationships, that have an improved chance at becoming long-term collaborations.

  2. Serendipity & Opportunities – Some of the best business opportunities arise from chance encounters, something algorithms cannot replicate.

  3. Trust & Credibility – Meeting someone in person fosters trust and creates a lasting impression. Of course, this can also work the other way around, alerting you to be cautious around those who don't come across as genuine when you meet in-person, no matter how authentic they appear via email.

  4. Emotional & Social Connection – Humans are social beings; in-person networking fulfills the need for real engagement beyond the screen.

Digital vs. Face-to-Face Networking

The key is balance. Digital networking expands reach and facilitates ongoing conversations, but in-person networking cements relationships and provides more meaningful engagements. Hybrid networking, combining the best of both worlds, is the way forward.

Conclusion

Networking isn’t dead - it has just changed. As businesses and professionals, we should embrace both digital tools and face-to-face opportunities to build meaningful connections. In a world increasingly dominated by AI and automation, human interaction remains one of our most powerful assets.

So, is networking dead? Absolutely not. It’s more important than ever and, judging by the turnout at every recent event the JAB team have attended, many other businesspeople agree!
